The Akita is originally from the Akita Prefecture in Japan, where they were used as hunting dogs. In Japan, champions are so highly prized that they can be made wards of court, and cannot be exported. If their owner falls on hard times, the dog will be cared for. The first show quality Akitas arrived in Britain from the USA in the 1980s, and are typically heavier that that which is accepted in Japan. Akitas are majestic in both appearance and outlook - an adult weighing over 8 stones is not a breed to be taken on lightly.
They are single-minded and quick to learn, but quickly tire of new tricks. Though heavy in frame, an Akita moves with surprising speed and power, yet it remains a very people-oriented breed and craves attention. They do not need (quite) endless exercise as long as they have freedom of mind.
Helen Keller once referred to her own Akita as 'an angel in fur'.
Much thought and consideration is needed before considering an Akita. The breed has a strong character and is naturally dominant - and so needs kind, careful and consistent training. But. given a household where every one is prepared to master the dog the Akita makes a most rewarding, loyal and affectionate companion.
